woven bonds
Refugee Week Malta is a festival celebrating arts and culture while highlighting the contributions of refugees. While the logo remains unchanged, the visual identity of the festival changes yearly, reflecting the different theme every year. The 2025 theme was “Community as a Superpower,” emphasising unity, diversity, and collective strength. The visual identity had be vibrant, inclusive, and engaging, creating a sense of belonging and connection.
The goal was to visualise the multicultural relationship between Maltese and other cultures through elements found across both and different, such as colour and lines. Textiles came to be a strong source of inspiration as they embody culture, history and identity, where threads are woven together to form intricate and patterned textiles unique to cultures and taking inspiration from others. Taking that line of thought, you can say that different cultures and identities weave humanity’s vibrant tapestry.
The identity developed visualised weaving of cultures through a creative library of shapes, bright colours and patterns that allowed the brand to be virtually limitless in use and combinations.
Different patterns were digitally drawn, taking inspiration from textile patterns and motifs across the Mediterranean. The colour palette was also inspired by Maltese and other cultures of migrant communities in Malta. The various shapes were drawn haphazardly like brush strokes to create dynamic while photography and patterns could be enclosed in or interact with the diverse shapes.
It was also necessary to create an identity and elements that could easily be used by participating organisations/individuals when creating advertising material for activities, whether they were using design software or Canva.
